“It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a … model airplane hacking our network???”

Homemade Spy Drone Cracks WiFi and GSM Networks.

Some people have an angel on one shoulder, a devil on the other. I have a devious hacker on one, a cyber analyst on the other. So when I came across this ‘homemade spy drone’ with the ability to hack into wireless and GSM networks the war began between this being the most phenomenal technology I’ve ever seen and one of the biggest threats to data security I could ever conjure up. The possibilities for both good and bad are endless, and just imagine how this is going to feed the minds of UFO chasers and conspiracy theorists everywhere (well, at least in Nevada, I’m pretty sure that’s where they all are). Among the many features that concern me/make me want this in the hands of troops and law enforcement…

Once airborne, the WASP can be programmed to target specific areas for surveillance using a GPS aided guidance system, essentially allowing the unit to function independently of an operator.

The WASP is also equipped with a high definition camera to supplement the hacked communications data with aerial footage of the targeted area.

The creators are presenting at this week’s DEF CON hacking conference so I’m sure there will be a lot more press on this and several geeks working overtime to build their own. While I’ve never attended DEF CON, I would love to take a stab at their notorious conference game called ‘spot the fed’ where you have to figure out the attendees from the big three letter agencies.
